1 John 4:13-16

1 John 4:13-16

God Abides Within Us

By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world. God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us.

Pastor John’s Notes:

To abide in God or to abide in Christ is the new state of being that God offers to those who receive Christ as Savior. When we acknowledge our need for God and open the door of our life to Christ, he comes and abides within us. He does this by His Holy Spirit and this is His promise to every believer.

Most people conceive of God as existing far away in a remote and inaccessible heaven. God does indeed dwell in the glory of heaven, but God has also made his dwelling with us. In Isaiah 57:15, God says, “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with those who are contrite and humble in spirit.” At first, we are not accustomed to having the Spirit of God abide within and it takes time to orient ourselves to this new way of living. Yet if we are deliberate and mindful of God’s presence within, we can soon learn to walk with God day-by-day and moment-by-moment. What an all-surpassing joy this is!

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for dwelling within me. Teach me to be mindful of your presence. Show me how I can walk with you in intimate fellowship day-by-day, and by doing so give me the gift of immeasurable joy.
