The Purpose of John’s Writing
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
Pastor John’s Notes:
This is the purpose of this letter. In other places in the Bible, such as the Gospel of John, the purpose is that we might believe. Here the readers already believe but have yet to come to the assurance of eternal life. God does not want his children to worry about their future. If we believe in Jesus and put our faith in him, he will certainly grant us eternal life. Jesus Christ did not surrender his life on the cross for nothing. He gave his life so that we might inherit eternal life. He has demonstrated his desire to give us this gift. Then let us rest in the assurance of his love for us.
Lord Jesus Christ, give me the assurance of your love for me and let the hope of eternal life take root within my soul. Let me no longer live in fear of condemnation, but instead let me walk in the joy of knowing that the salvation you offer is a permanent gift.
