Deuteronomy 18:15-18

Deuteronomy 18:15-18

The Kingdom Foretold – A Prophet like Moses

Before they entered the Promised Land, Moses said to the people, “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him. This is what you requested from the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, ‘Let us not continue to hear the voice of the Lord our God or see this great fire any longer, so that we will not die!’ Then the Lord said to me, ‘They have spoken well. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.”

Pastor John’s Notes:

Moses was the great prophet who led the people out of slavery in Egypt, through their wanderings in the wilderness, and to the Promised Land. The leadership of Moses is a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ who leads us out of captivity to sin, through our spiritual wanderings, and makes us citizens of the kingdom of God. The people of Israel believed this passage in Deuteronomy was as a foretelling of the Messiah. When Jesus fed the 5000 in the wilderness, the people saw this sign as a fulfillment of this prophecy. John 6:14 records that, “When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, “This truly is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Like Moses, Jesus is the prophet of God. By the power of the Holy Spirit, God put his own words into Jesus’ mouth so that whatever he spoke came directly from the Lord. As a result, wherever Jesus went people recognized the authority of his teaching. Jesus desires the citizens of his kingdom to share in this same authority. By the power of his Holy Spirit at work within us, we can share in the mind of God, speak the words of God, and serve as God’s representatives in the world.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, what an awesome privilege it is to serve as a citizen of your kingdom! Let your Holy Spirit reside within me, that I might know the mind of God, trust in the power of God, speak the words of God and serve as God’s representative wherever you lead me.
