Isaiah 9:2-7

Isaiah 9:2-7

The Kingdom Foretold – The Prince of Peace

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light;

a light has dawned on those living in the land of darkness. You have enlarged the nation and increased its joy. The people have rejoiced before you as they rejoice at harvest time and as they rejoice when dividing spoils. For you have shattered their oppressive yoke and the rod on their shoulders, the staff of their oppressor, just as you did on the day of Midian. For every trampling boot of battle and the bloodied garments of war will be burned as fuel for the fire.

For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from now on and forever. The zeal of the Lord of Armies will accomplish this.

Pastor John’s Notes:

This beautiful prophecy is often read as part of our Advent or Christmas celebrations. It foretells the peace that will come as a result of the Messiah’s reign. He will not be a man of war but a man of peace. At the birth of Jesus, the angels proclaimed his peace to the shepherds saying, “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Jesus Christ has come to bring peace; a peace that begins within you.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, as you are the Prince of Peace, let your peace reign in my soul. Calm my anxiety and still my restlessness. Let my soul rest in perfect peace knowing that you are reigning over all the earth. Teach me to become a peacemaker, that those whom I know and love may come to forgive each other and join in the joyful rest of the people of God.
