When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And no one dared to question him any longer. (Mark 12:34)
Pastor John’s Notes:
God sent Jesus Christ into the world to establish the kingdom of God. When we love God, we will find our way into a bright new realm. Jesus is at the center of the kingdom and is our Sovereign and Lord, who reigns with kindness and grace, but also in truth and with strength. He intimately knows all of his subjects and works to keep them safe and well provided for. His people flourish under his reign.
What did it mean for the scribe to be not far from the kingdom? Hadn’t he seen the truth of Jesus’ wisdom? He had come to see the love of God as the supreme rule of life. What did he still lack? There was one last step for him to take, one last truth to embrace. The scribe was standing before Jesus Christ, the King of kings and Lord of lords. The last step was to recognize and acknowledge the Lordship of Christ. Jesus’ statement, “You are not far from the kingdom of God,” may have been spoken with some measure of humor. Not far from the kingdom? He was but a few feet away from the King himself!
Lord Jesus Christ, I happily acknowledge you as the King of kings and Lord of lords. Let my love for God and love for you be the supreme rule of my life. Bring me fully into your kingdom and let me taste of its many joys. Let me grow into spiritual maturity and serve you as a citizen of the kingdom all the days of my life.
