See what great love the Father has given us that we should be called God’s children—and we are! (1 John 3:1)
Pastor John’s Notes:
This week we will begin a study in First John and its theme of love. Love is the power that binds us to God and to each other. It is a spiritual power that seeks after another person’s good over the good of one’s self. Spiritual love begins with God’s love for us, which is like the love of a good parent for their child.
Let me pause here by saying that for many Christians whose home life was challenging, the idea of God as a parent is difficult. Not every parent is a good parent, and many children have the experience of being emotionally neglected or abandoned by their parents. In such cases, it takes some time for them to realize that God’s love is far greater than the deficient love they received from their earthly parents. The realization that God is their Creator can be the truth that liberates them into new life.
For all of us, God wants us to understand the depth and permanence of his love. As a good parent is completely focused on the well-being of the child, so God is focused on us.
Heavenly Father, thank you that you are my Creator. It was you who created me, and no one else. I am your creature, made by your design and given life by your kindness and grace. Thank you that I can know your unfailing love. Teach me to walk in your love every day, and let it be the foundation of my life and the joy of my soul.
