1 John 3:1 – The World Does Not Know Us

See what great love the Father has given us that we should be called God’s children—and we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it didn’t know him. (1 John 3:1)

Pastor John’s Notes:

Our new identity as the children of God sets us at odds with the world. When we were friends with the world, all was well from a human point of view. We floated along with the culture and felt no inner resistance to worldly ways. But when we became children of God, everything changed. We are now at odds with the world. We see life differently and feel an inner pull toward a new destination. Suddenly, we are working against the current, and we feel the difference. So do the people around us. They do not know us because they do not know God. This difference is a sign that God is indeed at work within us. It is a symbol that we are indeed the children of God.

Heavenly Father, thank you for claiming me as your child and drawing me into a new and different life. The world can no longer claim me as its own, for you have given me a new identity. Give me the wisdom I need to navigate the change. Help me to show kindness to those who may stand against me and patience with those who may not understand.
