A Living Sacrifice – Romans 12:1-2

A Living Sacrifice – Romans 12:1-2

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:1-2)

Reflection:

The term “living sacrifice“ is a curious one. Typically in a sacrifice, something dies. But now that Jesus Christ has given his life on the cross, nothing ever needs to be sacrificed again. The sacrifice of Jesus Christ was a full, complete, and perfect sacrifice for sins of the entire world, past, present, and future. Because he gave his life for us in death, God desires us to give ourselves to him in life. To become a living sacrifice means that we choose to die to the things of this world so that we might live for God. We are able to live for God when he opens our minds to understand his will and purposes. Knowing God’s will, we then choose to surrender our desires and live for the will of God.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, as you have given yourself for me in death, so I offer myself to you in life.

Life Application:

The sacrifice of Christ was accomplished once for all time, but our sacrifice for him is something that we offer each and every day. Every day we must choose to die to the things of this world so that we might live for God. While the offering of Christ on the cross was a sacrifice of suffering, our daily sacrifice is one of joy and celebration. We take our delight in offering ourselves to him. While we must give up the things of this world in order to live for Christ, the treasures of the kingdom of God far surpass anything this world can offer. So spend some time today and offer yourself to Christ in worship, and do this each day! The treasures of the kingdom of God will be yours!
