A Prelude to the Gift of the Holy Spirit – Acts 2:37-38

A Prelude to the Gift of the Holy Spirit – Acts 2:37-38

When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles: “Brothers, what should we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:37-38)

Pastor John’s Notes:

The Holy Spirit is the very Spirit of God. He is the Spirit that came upon Jesus Christ at his baptism. Jesus was baptized not because he needed to be, but to show us the way. The Spirit came upon him so that everything he said and did was empowered by God. This same Spirit can also be within us!

The Holy Spirit is also the Spirit of Christ. In speaking of the coming of the Holy Spirit, Jesus said to his disciples, “In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you” (John 14:20). Here is the goal of our lives from Jesus’ perspective. He desires to live within us in an ongoing spiritual unity.

Lord, let your will be fulfilled. Let your Holy Spirit indwell me to full measure. Let me enjoy a deep, intimate ongoing relationship with you. Deliver me from isolation. Walk with me in friendship. Let this unity be the joy and treasure of my life.
