1 John 5:3

And his commands are not a burden, 1 John 5:3

Pastor John’s Notes:

As we seek to become obedient to Christ, the enemy will whisper in our ears that the commandments of God will become a burden to us. He will tell us that obedience to God’s laws will ruin our happiness and strip us of all joy. He will also insist that God’s laws are too hard and a burden too heavy to carry. Satan has been lying about God’s commands from the very beginning.

In the Garden of Eden, Satan lied by telling Eve that God was keeping them from reaching their full potential and that if they ate of the Tree of Knowing Good and Evil, that they would be like God. Eve ate the fruit of the tree, and then gave some to her husband who was with her. In doing so, they became parents of a fallen race. The suffering we experience, both spiritual and physical, is a direct result of their choice.

But now, through Jesus Christ and the outpouring of his Holy Spirit, we are given a new opportunity. With eyes wide open to the consequences of sin, God invites us once again to obey. His commandments are not burdensome but are life-giving. Through willing obedience, we step back into the realm of God’s favor and can begin again to experience life as God intended.

Forgive me, Father, for seeking my own way. Forgive me for violating your commands in willful disobedience. I see now what damage I have done to myself and others. By your Spirit at work within, teach me the joy of obedience to your law and will. Lead me forward into the beautiful life you intend for me.
