When the Holy Spirit comes, he will convict the world about righteousness… because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me. John 16:8,10
Pastor John’s Notes:
So long as the disciples were in the physical presence of Jesus, they had a perfect example of righteousness. They saw how Jesus lived, what he said, and what he did. They obeyed his immediate commands. If they had any questions, they would only need to ask. But once Jesus ascended into heaven, their reference point for the way of righteousness would be gone.
Jesus sent his Holy Spirit to continue his work among his disciples. He does not abandon us, leaving us to figure things out for ourselves. More than this, because the Spirit resides within us, we gain an intuitive sense of how we should live. Everything we need for Godliness resides within us because the Spirit is within us, showing us the way. The way of righteousness is more than the ability to discern what is right and wrong; it is a way of ordering our life so that we relate to God well and grow spiritually.
Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for sending your Spirit to reside within me. Teach me to be obedient to what your Spirit reveals. Show me the way of righteousness, and how I can order my life to grow in the ways of God.
