For it was you who created my inward parts;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I will praise you
because I have been remarkably and wondrously made.
Your works are wondrous,
and I know this very well.
My bones were not hidden from you
when I was made in secret,
when I was formed in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw me when I was formless;
all my days were written in your book and planned
before a single one of them began. (Psalm 139:13-16)
Here are two great truths that will impact the way we look at life. The first is that God’s activity reaches even into our mother’s womb, creating both our bodies and souls. The second is that each day of our lives was foreseen and planned by God. By the first, we learn to call God our Father, and can enjoy the great truth that we are God’s child. By the second, we can trust that God is with us each day, overseeing our spiritual development.
Lord God, you are my Creator, and I am your creation. Teach me to enjoy this reality each day. You also have plans for my life, so let me trust in you day by day.
The first application has to do with our respect for the unborn. The practice of using abortion as a means of birth control wrenches the unborn life out of God’s hands. If this passage is true, that God is the source of life, then we should have the utmost respect for life within the womb. The second application is to trust that the course of our lives is given to us by God, who directs our steps. Knowing this will help us endure circumstances we don’t like. It will help us open our eyes to see what God wants us to do. It will provide peace for our journey, regardless of our circumstances. So we should allow these truths to permeate our soul and lift us up to a higher understanding.
