The Lord protects you; the Lord is a shelter right by your side. The sun will not strike you by day or the moon by night. (Psalm 121:5-6)
David is rejoicing in the fact that God is watching over him. As he worked to fulfill God’s will, God never abandoned him, but provided everything that he needed. This protection was like a shelter from the sun on a hot day. The reference to the moon is most likely a response to the suspicion that evil things ruled the night. God will protect His people from the things they cannot see.
Lord, thank you that you protect me and are watching over all my activities. Thank you that you preserve me from the evils I can see as well as the evils that are hidden. Help me to trust in your watchful care.
Anxiety comes from a feeling of being out of control. The truth is that we are not in control of many things that affect us. If we are not careful, we can begin to take on a victim mentality and sink into depression or fear. The remedy for spiritual anxiety is to trust in the presence and watchful care of God. This requires us first to believe that there is a God and that He is mindful of our circumstances. Second, we have to let go of our desire to control everything and trust in God’s oversight. When we face a situation outside of our control, we can turn our worry and anxiety over to God and let go.
