Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander. Like newborn infants, desire the pure milk of the word, so that you may grow up into your salvation, if you have tasted that the Lord is good. (1 Peter 2:1-3)
Pastor John’s Notes:
Our salvation is not only for our future; it is a gift that can impact our present lives. Peter lists the common aspects of a worldly life: malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander. We see people living by these principles everywhere we look. The modern media, both entertainment and news, is saturated with these attitudes. But as followers of Jesus Christ, we were called to a different life, a better life.
Peter lists the two activities required for us to enter into new life in Jesus Christ. First, we are to rid ourselves of the hateful attitudes of the world. We cannot effectively follow Jesus Christ and still cultivate worldly attitudes. Secondly, we should desire the Word of God that will cause us to grow into maturity. If we have this desire, God will lead us to the truths of his Word that will cause us to grow. In this work, we are not alone. God deeply desires us to grow.
Lord, help me to turn from the ways of the world. Help me to catch myself whenever I react in a worldly fashion. Instill in me a deep desire for the truth of your Word, and let me grow up in my salvation.
