Jesus on Divorce – Matthew 5:31-32

Jesus on Divorce – Matthew 5:31-32

It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (Matthew 5:31-21)

Pastor John’s Notes:

In Jesus’ day, a man could divorce his wife for any reason simply by giving her a certificate of divorce and sending her on her way. Women could not own property and did not have legal rights to sue; the only recourse of survival for a divorced woman was to find another husband. Jesus challenged this practice and gave only one condition where divorce was acceptable, which was sexual infidelity. Marriage is a gift from God which mirrors God’s love for his people. Jesus does not want us to take marriage lightly but seriously.

Prayer:

Lord, bless the marriages of your children. Let the foundation of marriage be sacrificial love and a permanent foundation for the family. Let our homes be havens of blessing and peace.
