In him was life, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it. (John 1:4-5)
Pastor John’s Notes:
There are two words for life in Greek, the language of the New Testament. “Bios” refers to biological life. “Zoë” refers to spiritual life, and it is this word that is used in this passage. In Jesus, there is spiritual life. He has come to elevate mere biological creatures to become spiritual beings able to perceive and cooperate with God’s activity in the world. This spiritual life is like a light to us, showing us the true way to live. Light dispels darkness and darkness has no power over light. Therefore, once Jesus gives us spiritual life, our souls will be permanently transformed and we will see the world as God sees it.
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for offering us a new spiritual life. Open our minds to the truths of God. Let the light of your truth dispel the darkness of our soul.
