John 16:10

John 16:10

When the Holy Spirit comes, he will convict the world…about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me. (John 16:10)

Jesus Christ lived a righteous life, a life that was fully pleasing to God. Jesus came not only to save us but also to enable us to live in the same way as children of God. Jesus taught his disciples the ways of God and set before them an example to follow. Jesus acted righteously in everything he did so his followers could see what holiness looks like. But now Jesus has ascended to the Father and no longer walks the earth. How then can we know righteousness? What now is our reference for holiness? The Holy Spirit who resides within us continues the work of Christ to show us the way of righteousness. The Spirit bears witness with our spirit as to the truthful and right way. The Holy Spirit serves as an inner compass that directs us toward God at every step of our journey. We no longer need to guess what righteousness is, for by the Spirit we know it intuitively.

If you have received Christ as Savior, you have the Holy Spirit residing within you. He is constantly available to you, yet he will not force himself upon you. In each situation you face, if you seek God’s will and way, the Spirit will guide you in the ways of righteousness. And the Holy Spirit is a reliable guide. He will never be confused or uncertain about what to do, nor will the Spirit ever be mistaken or mislead you. The Holy Spirit will convey God’s good, pleasing, and perfect will directly to the innermost part of the soul. During Jesus’ earthly ministry, whenever he taught his disciples, he had to speak carefully and use many parables because his disciples were slow to understand. But the Spirit does not need to do this; the Spirit can convey the truth of God directly to your innermost soul. By his work, you will know God’s truth intuitively and be able to respond with great confidence and conviction. Your role will be to pay attention, to believe, and to follow the Spirit’s leading.

Holy Spirit, I invite you to reveal the righteous ways of God. I have tried and tested the ways of this world and have found them deficient and corrupt. I now long to walk in the way of righteousness, yet I lack the wisdom necessary to do so. I confess that whenever I am pressed with anxiety or fear, I quickly fall back into old worldly patterns and habits, even though I know there is a better way. I need your help and conviction. Teach me the wisdom to seek your direction in each and every circumstance I face. Let your wisdom continually guide me on the right path.
