John 4:21-24

Live by the Spirit – Jesus’ Discourse with the Woman of Samaria

Jesus encountered a woman at a well in Samaria and explained how God was about to usher in a new age of spiritual worship.

Jesus told her, “Believe me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews. But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth.”

Pastor John’s Notes:

The Jews and the Samaritans were distant cousins argued over where the true center of worship was, in Jerusalem or Samaria. Jesus declared that soon it wouldn’t matter. God is not interested in where we worship, but how we worship. First, God desires that we worship spiritually, that is, inwardly and without the need for external forms. As followers of Jesus Christ, we should all learn to offer God worship whether we are standing in a cathedral or a cornfield. Also, God wants us to worship in truth, that is, with integrity and authenticity. External forms are fine, but they are of no value if we do not worship truly and from the heart. While authentic worship may not be intuitive for us, when the Holy Spirit enters, we are enabled to worship the way God desires.

Holy Spirit, show me how to worship God in spirit and in truth. Teach me to worship whenever you prompt me to do so. Let worship and praise always be on my lips and in my heart. Let me taste of the joy of spiritual worship, knowing that God also rejoices in receiving my adoration. Let my body become a living temple where God dwells and is glorified.
