Matthew 5:14-16

Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)

The way that we live as believers has an impact on the people around us. Put simply, if we shine our light, others will see. This is why it is so very important for us to live authentically and genuinely. Our life of faith is not only for ourselves, it is also for others. God puts us on display so that others can see the beauty of the ways of God and come to Christ.

The church should be like a city on a hill, visible and beautiful. Collectively, our life together should be sweet to God, a joy to us, and attractive to others. Weary travelers–that is, those who are seeking God–can find a home among us. As each city has its own culture, ours should be the righteousness of God. We must always be welcoming to others, just as God has welcomed us.

Lord Jesus Christ, let me bear your light to the world, shining brightly for others to see. Let us as a church be a city on a hill, visible and holy. Let your church throughout the world bear your image so that the kingdom of God might grow upon the earth. Let us remain faithful until you come again to reign over us all forever.
