Matthew 5:5

Matthew 5:5

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5)

Meekness can be interpreted as humility or gentleness. These are essentially the same characteristic but are directed differently. Humility is directed toward those in authority over us. As God is the highest authority, we should acknowledge God’s Lordship over every aspect of our lives. Humility sets us right before God, and God always blesses those who seek to honor Him.

Gentleness is directed toward those over whom we have authority. To be gentle is to care for others in a loving manner. When we are gentle, we recognize the weakness of others and seek their well-being over our own. God honors the gentle, and sets them in positions of authority over things that are precious to Him.

Lord, teach me to always humble myself before you. Teach me also to be gentle in all of my relationships, bearing patiently with others in the same way that you have been patient with me.
