In this, love is made complete with us so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because as he is, so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. So the one who fears is not complete in love. (1 John 4:17-18)
Pastor John’s Notes:
Many people think of God as an angry judge who is ready to strike us down for our many sins. This image does a terrible injustice to God. Such fear keeps people from coming to God and robs them of the forgiveness and healing God is ready and willing to give. When we realize that God truly loves us and wants to forgive us, our perspective changes. The love of God drives away our fear. In its place, God gives us the gift of assurance. We no longer need to live under the dread of eternal punishment; instead, we can face the future with joyful expectation. We are the children of God, and nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.
Lord, let your love drive away all my fear. Give me the joy of living that is the right of every child of God. Empower me to walk in new ways that lead to a life of blessing and peace.
