If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. (Galatians 5:18)
Pastor John’s Notes:
When we choose to live by the Spirit, we are no longer subject to the law. This does not mean that we no longer obey the law. Far from it! In fact, it means that we are truly obedient for the first time. The law is like a teacher who is hired to teach rebellious children who don’t want to learn. The law uses reward and punishments to modify behavior. Typically, we are obedient to the law either because we fear punishment or desire reward. But when we come into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, we are gifted with a new spirit. Suddenly, we want to learn and desire for the first time to be truly obedient. We are no longer reluctant students who need rewards and punishments to prod us. We are willing learners who need only a mentor to guide us. The Holy Spirit is our mentor who walks alongside us and shows us the way of true obedience. Obedience to the Spirit leads to transformation, which in turn prepares us for a lifetime of service.
Lord, let the desire to be obedient be the new principle of my life. Teach me no longer to think of obedience to your law as a burden and a chore, but a joy and a privilege. Through obedience to your Spirit, let me walk in newness of life.
