We are given new birth into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you. (1 Peter 1:4)
Pastor John’s Notes:
The living hope that God gives us is evidence that there is a future life being prepared for us in heaven. The purpose of our time here on earth is that we might grow to spiritual maturity in preparation for our eternal life with God. We are like little children whose father has prepared a place for us in his business and is only waiting for us to mature. Jesus alluded to this when he was twelve years old and stayed behind in Jerusalem to talk with the teachers of the law. When his parents finally found him, he said, “Didn’t you know that I must be about my father’s business?” So should we.
Our inheritance in heaven is quite unlike our present condition here on earth. On earth, everything passes away, while in heaven, everything is imperishable. On earth, everything is tainted by sin, while in heaven, everything is undefiled. On earth, everything ultimately loses its luster, while in heaven, nothing ever fades.
One of the problems we face on earth is in our over-attachment to worldly things. We spend too much time worrying about temporary and transitory things. In doing so, we neglect spiritual things that are of eternal value. One of the first spiritual disciplines we need to develop is the ability to change our focus. This verse can help because it declares that even now an inheritance of eternal value is being kept in heaven for us.
Heavenly Father, thank you for the role you are preparing for me in heaven. Teach me to set my hope there. Help me to divest myself of the worldly cares and worries of the present moment, and to invest my attention in things of eternal value.
