Don’t give what is holy to dogs or toss your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them under their feet, turn, and tear you to pieces. (Matthew 7:6)
Pastor John’s Notes:
When we first come to Christ, we experience such joy and transformation that we want everyone to share in the same experience. But not everyone is in the same stage of the journey that we are. Some will be receptive, but others may scoff. The pearls represent the gospel of Christ; the pigs represent those whose minds are steeped in the way of the world and want nothing to do with anything holy. Such people are unable to appreciate the things of God.
Jesus is speaking from experience. Many people who heard his words received them with `gladness while others scoffed. Jesus would always give time to those who were genuinely seeking God, but he would turn from those whose purpose for engaging with him was to refute or disprove his teaching. We should do the same. As followers of Christ, we are not required to fall into the traps that other people set for us nor engage with those who are not truly seeking God.
Lord, give me sufficient wisdom to discern who is genuinely seeking God and who is not, who is open and who is closed. Teach me to be an effective witness to those whose heart is open to the gospel.
