For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. (Isaiah 9:5-7)
God sent Jesus into the world to establish the kingdom of God. In the same way that Jesus wants to restore us to himself as individuals, the kingdom of God is human society restored to God. The kingdom of God surpasses all of the kingdoms of this world. It is governed by Jesus himself, who knows each of its citizens and invites us to share in his work. We should also note the zealousness of God in establishing the kingdom. This is no minor work in God’s mind; it is his passion to see the kingdom established and growing. Anything we do for the sake of the kingdom will have God’s backing and empowerment.
Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for coming into the world to establish the kingdom of God. Thank you for your invitation to become one of its citizens. Open my mind to see the beauty of the kingdom and empower me to learn its excellent principles, values, and practices.
It is a great privilege to serve as a citizen in the kingdom. The work that we do here on earth will have an eternal impact. The love that we share here on earth as brothers and sisters in Christ is a love that will endure through eternity. Everything that is of this world will pass away, because this world is disconnected from God. But everything we do in connection with the kingdom will last because God is eternal and his kingdom will endure. So don’t get caught up in the things of this world that will pass away, invest yourself fully in the kingdom and its glory. There will be a great return on your investment!
