Romans 7:25

Romans 7:25

Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I myself am serving the law of God, but with my flesh, the law of sin. (Romans 7:25)

Paul now gives us the answer to our slavery to sin. God has sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to be our Savior and Lord, and what a wonderful and amazing Savior he is! Jesus is the answer to all our troubles. He entered this world while we were yet sinners, proving God’s unconditional love for us. He walked among us in humility, not seeking to dominate us with his power or glory but taking the place of a servant. He taught us the ways of God and withheld nothing from us. He healed the sick, opened the eyes of the blind, calmed the storm, and raised the dead. Then he surrendered his life on the cross for our redemption. Jesus is no aloof prince who is indifferent to the needs of the people he rules. He loves us with a full and passionate love. He has immersed himself fully in the human experience and has overcome every temptation and fear. Now, he is risen from the dead and reigns supreme! He will be the Savior of everyone who comes to him. Yes indeed, “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

But after declaring that salvation is through Christ, Paul does something interesting: he reiterates his fallen condition, saying, “So then, with my mind, I myself am serving the law of God, but with my flesh, the law of sin.” Why the need for him to state this again? The answer is simple. After we are saved, God must yet liberate our minds, a work that is accomplished by his Holy Spirit. We will hear more of this in the coming verses.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for coming into the world to be our Savior. Thank you for humbling yourself, walking among us, and teaching us the ways of God. Thank you for taking our place in your death upon the cross. And thank you for your resurrection in which we have hope. You are truly the Savior of the world, and my hope is in you. Now that you have purchased me by your blood deliver me from the enduring power of sin at work within me. Lead me into the new way that is empowered by your Spirit.
