For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off,as many as the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:39)
Pastor John’s Notes:
Here we see the moving power behind our spiritual lives. It is God who initiated our relationship. Even before we chose to follow after God, God chose us. Jesus once said to his disciples, “You did not choose me, but I chose you” (John 15:16). This is not to say that our response to God’s call is not essential. But God is always the initiator of everything spiritual. God calls, we respond, and then God pours out his Holy Spirit into our lives.
It is important for us to remember this because there will come times when our strength will fail, and we will be overcome by some worldly trouble. If our life in God was dependent solely upon our own fortitude, then none of us could stand. But because it is God who has called us, God will finish the work He began. Whenever we stumble and fall, a simple returning to God is all that is needed to restore us to wholeness and strength.
Heavenly Father, thank you that spiritual life begins and is upheld by you. Keep me in close fellowship with you. Seek me when I go astray. Restore me when I fall. Strengthen my spirit by your continual presence. Lead me forward into the life you have prepared for me.
