When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, because he was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes. (Matthew 7:28-29)
Pastor John’s Notes:
When people heard Jesus’ teaching, it rang true for them. He taught the truth without bending it to any false motive. He was not attempting to manipulate people nor seeking to advance his own standing. He taught what he lived, and he lived a righteous life before God. He knew what he was talking about.
We can always trust Jesus to speak the truth to us. Unlike the human ideologies that pervade our culture and attempt to manipulate us toward political ends, the wisdom of Jesus Christ is offered to the world for the blessing of all people. When we put his teachings into practice, we align ourselves with the will and purposes of God, and this always leads to blessing. His teaching heals the damage of our sin and shows us what to do next. It restores relationships and makes life a joy. Jesus is not only our Savior for the future; he saves us now.
Lord Jesus Christ, I recognize that you have all authority and that your teachings are right and true. You are not only my Savior, but you are my Teacher. I will listen to your Word and learn from your lessons. As I put them into practice, let me enjoy the blessings that will come.
