“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. It collapsed with a great crash.” (Matthew 7:24-27)
Pastor John’s Notes:
The teachings of Jesus compel us to put them into practice. They are not merely philosophical ideals; they are eminently practical teachings, meaning that there are many things for us to do! Such is the joy of the Christian life, that there are things we can do. Jesus also promises that if we put his words into practice, our lives will rest on a sure foundation.
In the ancient world, it would be hard to tell the difference as to whether or not a house had a foundation built upon bedrock. A builder could easily cut corners and create the appearance that a house was secure. Time and money that should be spent on a foundation that no one will see can easily be diverted into decorations that will make the house more presentable. In the same way, we can cut corners in our walk with God, but sooner or later, trouble will come. And trouble will test our foundation.
Jesus promises that there is a solid and sure way of living, but much of our labor to build such a life will be done in secret. Times alone with God in prayer or reading the Scriptures for ourselves may not improve our social standing with other believers, but who cares? The reason we came to Christ is to save our souls, not to improve our social standing.
So let’s get busy! Each day we should read something from the Scriptures, especially the teachings of Christ. And each day, we should find something to do to put his words into practice.
Lord Jesus Christ, help me build my life on the sure foundation of your teaching. Show me how to do the secret work of the soul that will set me on a sure foundation.
