The Family of God – Matthew 12:46-50

The Family of God – Matthew 12:46-50

While he was still speaking with the crowds, his mother and brothers were standing outside wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” He replied to the one who was speaking to him, “Who is my mother and who are my brothers?” Stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” (Matthew 12:46-50)

Reflection:

The relationships of marriage and family that we enjoy on earth are temporary. In the eternal kingdom of God, we will still know and love one another, but as brothers and sisters of the eternal family of God. This higher form of relationship is something that we can begin to enjoy even while we are on Earth. In the above story, Jesus expressed this truth, where he set his disciples above his own mother and brothers.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus Christ into the world to establish the kingdom of God. Teach us to enjoy even now the beautiful relationship we can share with one another as Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

Life Application: Rethink Your Relationships

This coming week, we will begin to look at the highest form of human relationship which is within the family of God, considering one another as brothers and sisters in Christ. Begin today to open your mind to this greater reality. Start thinking about how relating to each other this way will transform your relationships.
