The Light of the World – Matthew 5:14-16

The Light of the World – Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)

Pastor John’s Notes:

Jesus does not want his followers to hide from the world. Because the world will scoff and berate Christian believers, we often tend to live our lives as quietly as possible. Christians can become reclusive, but Jesus wants us to live our lives of faith out in the open for all to see. The reason is that Jesus has come to save the world and therefore calls us to be his witnesses. People must first see a difference in how the Christian life is to be lived before they will consider it a viable option. They must see not only the difference in the manner of our living but the boldness and confidence with which we believe. They must see that we will be faithful to God even if we must pay a heavy price. God will use this steadfast witness to attract remarkable people to himself.

Forgive me, Lord, for my tendency to hide my faith. Give me courage and boldness that I might live fearlessly for you. Let me never be ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ, but let me live openly and joyfully for others to see. Let my personal witness be in the words I speak, the manner in which I live, and my steadfast resolve to follow you even if I am persecuted. Let all this be to your glory.
