The Motive of True Confession – 1 John 1:9

The Motive of True Confession – 1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

Pastor John’ Notes:

What an amazing promise! God is ready to forgive us of all our sin! God also wants to cleanse us of all unrighteousness! All that is needed is for us to confess, and he will do it. True confession is more than merely admitting what we have done. It involves the hope of what God has promised to do. The question is, “Do we truly want to be cleansed?” All of us wish to find forgiveness, mostly because we do not like the feelings of guilt and shame that our sins produce. But once forgiven, we often return to our sin because deep down we don’t want to be cleansed of them. This is not the kind of confession God seeks.

True confession is born out of the desire to be rid of our sins once and for all. Sometimes it is hard to envision living without a particular habit or inclination because we’ve lived with it so long. But God sees what we cannot see, and wants to bring us into a better way of living. True confession trusts that God’s ways are better ways. We want to be rid of our past and enter into the new life God has prepared. When we confess our sin with an honest motive to be cleansed, God will respond quickly.

Prayer:

Lord, teach me the power of true confession. Give me a vision of the better life you have in store for me. Teach me to hate my sin so that I might confess with true motives. And do what you promise to do: forgive my sin and cleanse me of all unrighteousness.
