The Sacrifice of Obedience – 1 Samuel 15:22

The Sacrifice of Obedience – 1 Samuel 15:22

And Samuel said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. (1 Samuel 15:22)

Reflection:

When King Saul went to war against the Amalekites, God gave specific instructions that upon his victory, Saul was to destroy all of the flocks and herds, leaving nothing alive. But Saul couldn’t bring himself to do what God commanded and kept the best of the cattle for himself under the false premise of eventually offering them as a sacrifice to the Lord. God sent the prophet Samuel to condemn Saul for his greed. Samuel said that because Saul had rejected the Lord’s command, God had rejected him as king. Obedience is better than sacrifice.

Prayer:

Lord, teach me to always honor you by obeying your commands.

Life Application:

Obedience to God is no small matter. God wants servants he can trust, and when he finds them, he entrusts authority to them. Obedience is never easy. As fallen creatures, we are predisposed toward self-rule and will defy God’s commands. And whenever we break God’s commands, we typically attempt to explain away our disobedience either by shifting blame or by claiming a hidden good motive. But God sees around all of our false rationalizations and understands the true motives of our hearts. Although obedience to God’s law goes against the grain of our human nature, if we choose the difficult pathway, we can grow in our ability to obey. Each day presents us with numerous opportunities to strengthen our resolve to follow in the ways of God. So begin to look for opportunities to obey. Step by step you will grow in strength and godliness.
