Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I am warning you about these things—as I warned you before—that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21)
Pastor John’s Notes:
In this passage, Paul points us to the obvious evils around us as proof we need a new Spirit within us. Our life on earth is preparation for an eternal life yet to come. God is preparing us to serve as overseers of his creation. The decisions we make here shape the manner of our future governance. If we give ourselves over to obey the sinful inclinations of our flesh and the center principle of our life is self-interest, we will have no place in God’s eternal kingdom. Paul is warning us of the danger we are in. This warning should motivate us to get serious about the pursuit of a new way of living.
Lord, I hate the sin in my life. The problem is, I have also loved it. Let my love for you and the desire to live by the Spirit move me to embrace an entirely new life. Search out my soul to expose any hidden sin that lies deep within me. Keep me from backsliding into old habits. Let the new way of obedience to your Spirit become the new law of my life.
