The Word of God: Living by the Word

The Word of God: Living by the Word

But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4)

Jesus spoke these words to counter the devil’s temptation in the wilderness. Jesus was hungry and the devil tempted him to use the power of God to change stones into bread. Jesus set God’s Word above even the need for food. Without food, we will die materially, but without the word of God, we will die spiritually. But if we hear God’s Word and put it into practice, we will thrive spiritually.

Lord, let your words be my spiritual food so that my soul might thrive.

Life Application:

Jesus was able to counter the devil’s temptations because he had earlier internalized the Word of God. This is a pattern for us to follow. The word of God should not merely be words written on a page, but they should be living principles that are written in our hearts. So in your personal study of the Bible, listen carefully for the spiritual truths that God offers as your daily bread. Write them down, set them to memory, and reflect on them regularly. In this way, God’s word will take root deep within your soul.
