Hempfield UMC Volunteers in Mission
Swansboro, North Carolina
From Bob McCune:
The Mission team from Hempfield UMC spent one week in May in Swansboro, North Carolina helping to rebuild after the damage caused by Hurricane Florence in September of 2018. The state of North Carolina suffered major damage to various areas of the state. There are currently disaster sites located in eleven different areas of the state. Our team choose the Swansboro site because they needed workers to assist with the recovery and we thought the area would be closer to our church.
Our team had twelve workers and we were given two different homes to repair. The first was a mobile home that needed to have new skirting installed around the base. The next task was to remove and install a new front porch and steps leading to the sidewalk. Five members of the team worked on this home and completed the task by the end of the week. The homeowner was very pleased with the results and thanked us for our help.
The second home needed repairs to the drywall in the garage ceiling, and also to the drywall in the master bedroom ceiling. A smaller bedroom needed to be painted and the closet needed repairs and new bi-fold doors had to be installed. The bathroom needed to be painted, the front porch posts were removed and replaced, the front door lock assembly and deadbolt were replaced and the garbage disposal was removed from the kitchen. There was damage to the trim and facia on the garage so it was replaced. The seven remaining members of the team worked to repair this home.
The team made a great contribution to enable these homeowners to recover. There are still many others in the area of Swansboro who need help. Many of the workers on this team are already considering returning to help in the recovery effort. Our mission work could not be done without the support that we have received from the members of Hempfield UMC and we thank you for also being a part of the recovery effort.
